Will Democracy Prevail?

“Shall we end by having a theocracy? No, indeed. Faith unites us, knowledge gives us freedom. We shall therefore prevent any theocratic tendencies from coming to the fore on the part of our priesthood. We shall keep our priests within the confines of their temples in the same way as we shall keep our professional army within the confines of their barracks. Army and priesthood shall receive honors high as their valuable functions deserve. But they must not interfere in the administration of the State which confers distinction upon them, else they will conjure up difficulties without and within.” – Theodore Herzl, The Jewish State

Our Mandate

The mandate of the Jerusalem Institute of Justice is two-fold.

First, we strive to create a united voice of Jews and Christians around the world to advocate on behalf of Israel and moral clarity in the Middle East, within the international community. Our “Israel Now” project empowers the Judeo-Christian community to disseminate a message which balances the skewed and often downright untruthful news about Israel, promulgated today in international news agencies.

Secondly, we strive to create a united voice of Jews and Christians around the world to advocate on behalf of strengthening the democratic character of the state of Israel. We believe that by fulfilling this latter goal, we will greatly improve the potency of our international campaign on behalf of Israel. We do not believe that a Jewish-Democratic state is a conflict of terms, but rather an attainable reality.

Most of the founding fathers of the United States of America envisioned a Christian-Democratic state. They realized however, that for a legitimate democracy to exist, they must create freedom of religion and a healthy separation of church and state. One can argue as to the success or failure of the USA in fulfilling the goals of its founding fathers, but it is a generally recognized fact that no other nation over the past 2,000 years has allowed its Jewish citizens to flourish and indeed rise to the top in practically every sector of society, regardless of their small numbers and religious affiliation.

Courageous Decisions

The struggle to preserve a tolerant democracy in the USA has required public leaders to make courageous decisions. One such decision was passed in 1871, by the Republican-controlled 42nd Congress and implemented by the Republican President, Ulysses Grant, who signed into law the Ku Klux Klan Act. The law banned the KKK and other similar terrorist organizations. President Grant then deployed federal troops to crush a Klan uprising in South Carolina. Although eleven years later the U.S. Supreme Court overturned many provisions of the Ku Klux Klan Act, the original form of the KKK faded into history. Why? Following the bold decision of President Grant and his congress, the general American public lost patience with white-Protestant supremacy rhetoric, and delegitimized anti-democratic extremist elements within the society.

Today, a similar courageous decision is required by the leaders of Israel, and particularly by our new Attorney General, Yehuda Weinstein. The Jerusalem Institute of Justice has just submitted a petition to Mr. Weinstein to implement his authority to dismantle Yad L’Achim by officially recognizing it as an anti-democratic terrorist organization. To read the full-text English translation of the petition, please see: here

. This ultra-orthodox supremacy organization has provided fertile soil over the last 60 years for the growth of extremists who disdain the rule of law, principles of democracy, the values of the Israeli society, and human dignity. The democratic character of the State of Israel hangs in the balance.

Birds of a Feather Flock Together

We were not surprised that Jack Teitel the “Jewish Terrorist” confessed during his police interrogation, to having been an active member of Yad L’Achim; participating in their operations for five full years. We have no doubt that Teitel’s extremist world views steeped in radical hatred, against Arabs, left-wing activists, homosexuals, and Messianic Jews, were affected by Yad L’Achim, in which he was active for such a long time.

We believe that we have produced ample evidence to establish the fact that Yad L’Achim carries out many illegal activities including: incitement to hatred and violence, physical violence, vandalism, and stalking and harassing ethnic and religious minorities. Law enforcement agencies and the Attorney General at their helm, must act with uncompromising resolve against Yad L’Achim, in order to bring an end to this campaign of persecution against ethnic and religious minorities; a campaign which produced a lethal Jewish terrorist. Otherwise, it is only a matter of time until more “Teitels” appear on the scene in Israel.

Will our new Attorney General pass this test of courageous leadership? Will he faithfully fulfill his position by upholding the rule of law and democracy in Israel? Only time will tell. We hope and pray that he will do so in the spirit of our founding father’s vision to create a Jewish-Democratic state in the land of Israel. The democratic character of the State of Israel certainly hangs in the balance.
